DIABETES AND EATING DISORDER CARE

Diabulimia, when insulin gets restricted or skipped to affect weight, is one of the most dangerous and least understood eating disorders in type 1 diabetes. We’re dietitians certified in both diabetes and eating disorder care, based in Austin, working with clients across Texas by secure video. If this is you, or someone you love, you’re in the right place.

A short word on what diabulimia is.

Diabulimia (clinically, ED-DMT1) is the use of insulin restriction to affect weight in someone with type 1 diabetes. It sits at the exact overlap of a metabolic condition and an eating disorder, which is why standard diabetes advice and standard eating disorder advice both tend to miss it. It is serious, it is treatable, and it is not a failure of willpower.

Does this sound like you, or someone you love?

People rarely arrive with the word "diabulimia." They arrive frightened, exhausted, and unsure who to tell. If any of this lands, reaching out is reasonable, not an overreaction.

The diabetes and the eating have become tangled together and you can’t pull them apart.

Your care team doesn’t know the whole picture of what’s happening with food and insulin.

You’ve been in the ER for DKA and no one asked about eating.

You want to stop but you don’t know who understands both the diabetes and the disorder.

You don’t have to have the right words for it.

We do, and we’ll take it from there.

Care that treats both conditions at once

Recovery from diabulimia can’t come at the cost of diabetes management, and diabetes management can’t come at the cost of recovery. We hold both. Care is weight-inclusive, trauma-informed, and paced to what feels safe, with no meal plan handed over at the door.

  • A dietitian who understands insulin, blood sugar and disordered eating as one picture

  • Close coordination with your endocrinologist and therapist, because diabulimia is treated by a team, not alone

  • A weight-inclusive, non-shaming approach, because shame is part of what keeps this going

  • Support at whatever stage you’re at, whether you’re ready to change today or just ready to talk
